Louys de Cretser, the younger brother of Cornelis who was also in the service of the VOC, married in Ceylon from where his descendants “the de Kretser family of Ceylon(now Sri Lanka)” belong to the so-called 'Dutch Burghers'.

Cornelis de Cretser

Baptised in Culemborg, the Netherlands, on 24 Nov 1637. Died in Algiers, 1676 or 1677.  a VOC official, he was the son of Cornelise de Cretser, a merchant and inn-keeper of Culemborg, and his wife, Adriana Breeckevelt. Nothing is known of his early life.  Cornelis entered the service of the VOC in 1660 and sailed for the Cape as a midshipman aboard the Wapen van Holland in 1661. The Commander designate of the Cape, Gerrit van Harn who also came from Culemborg, was on the same ship but died during the voyage.

On his arrival at the Cape in June 1661 Cornelis was made an official (schrijver) in the military pay-office.  From 15 September 1661 to 12 February 1662, Cornelis accompanied the expedition under P. Everaert which went looking for the Namaquas( a tribe of native African people who lived on the North-West coast  past Saldanha Bay). On this occasion he acted as diarist and third in command.

Cornelis made rapid progress at the Cape; he was promoted assistant on 22 September 1662, dispenser on 30 April 1663 and Secretary of the Political Council on 5 January 1665. In addition he was book-keeper of the garrison. Promoted junior merchant on 7 May 1666, he also served as fiscal, later acting as merchandise book-keeper and warehouse supervisor and from 1668 onwards as deputy Governor.

Cornelis performed his duties to the full satisfaction of the Political Council and was promoted merchant by Commissioner Matthias van den Brouck on 11 March 1670, an appointment which was confirmed in writing by The Seventeen on 15 May 1671. At that stage the VOC was not aware that Cornelis, who had undertaken a tour of inspection to Saldanha Bay( a sheltered bay where the VOC vessels would drop anchor for repairs, etc..) in 1670, had abruptly terminated his service with the Company.

Aiming at the highest office at the Cape, Cornelis asked the Commissioner's permission to act as commander if P. Hackius, who was to succeed Commander J. Borghorst, did not come in time. Hackius arrived at the Cape eight days after this request had been made, but since he was ailing, Cornelis carried out a large part of his duties. Thus, for example, he entertained a few guests on behalf of the commander on 10 April 1671.

During the meal, Captain Adriaan Drom of the Wimmenum and Isaac Fonteyn, a former captain on his way back to the Netherlands, had an argument and began to fight. Both of them had been drinking and Cornelis, who had attempted to separate them, was wounded by Drom. Mad with rage, he drew his rapier and killed him. He immediately fled and after hiding at the Cape for eight months succeeded in stowing away on a ship bound for the Netherlands.

In March 1673 Cornelis asked the VOC to reinstate him. This request was granted six months later, on condition that he went to the Cape to account for his behaviour. If he were found innocent, he would again become a deputy-governor in the Company's service. The deficit of 10 000 guilders which Cornelius’s books showed after his flight can perhaps be explained by his hasty departure. The fact that the VOC was prepared to employ him again is proof of their confidence in him.

Bound for the Cape a second time, Cornelis left Texel on board the Stermeer on 30 April 1674, but the ship was seized en route. In a letter dated 11 May 1677 the Chamber of Amsterdam mentioned that Cornelis had died in prison in Algiers.

He was undoubtedly a competent and hardworking official. It is remarkable that as early as 1670 he had expressed the opinion that there was a danger of over-production of wine at the Cape and that a fixed price should be introduced. He also felt that the garrison was in urgent need of reinforcement owing to the dispersal of the soldiers and the wide variety of tasks they had to perform. As far as is known, Cornelis de Cretser did not marry.

Note: The preceding article from the dictionary of  South African biography archives sheds new light on the origins of the family. It is clear from the new information I have received, that the Cornelis(baptism date 26/11/1637) was in fact the older brother of Louys (baptism date 6/8/1649) who was the forerunner of the de Kretser family of Ceylon(now Sri Lanka). The confusion has arisen by their father Cornelius Cornelise having the same sounding name but not referred to in (1)  in the genealogy. Access to these records and verification was not readily available as it is today when the genealogy was being first compiled in 1917.  Keith de Kretser(137)
